Kehena Beach |
Outdoor
Activities
Kehena Beach, a stunning black sand beach, is frequently visited
by dolphins and whales. It is a 10 minute walk from Ocean
Spirit. Continue along the same road and there is Kalapana,
a village buried under lava. An interesting area but very
unstable land under your feet.
Kehena Beach
On your drive to Pahoa on Highway 130, just around the corner
coming from Kalapena, is the old Star Of The Sea church
built in 1929 and rescued from the approaching lava flow. |
Isaac Hale Beach Park is a good scuba diving site and turtle
watching spot. A 15 minute drive from Ocean Spirit.
Isaac Hale Beach Park
5 minutes further along the road is Ahalanni County Park. They
have a beautiful, natural Hot Spring for swimming, snorkeling or
just enjoying the majestic scenery.
Ahalanui Park
A few miles further down the road is Kapoho Bay with tide
pools ideal for safe snorkeling and underwater exploring.

Lava Tree State Park is on your way to Pahoa on Highway 130.
There are fascinating lava formations around buried trees. |

Shopping
Pahoa is your closest town for everything you need. It still
has an old Hawaiian feeling to it. Stroll along the boardwalk
and little side streets. There is a grocery and hardware store
in Pahoa village just at the end of town. Downtown has banks
and little antique stores and a big and well stocked health food
store which has a delicious section of prepared food to go.
A big open market happens every Saturday and Sunday on Highway
130 on the way to Hilo. Everything you can imagine is
offered there.
Hilo has all the shops and malls you always wanted to explore.
Check out the old downtown area with the nice stores and
boutiques. There is also a big farmers market
there every day in the morning.

Dining
Just a half mile down the road the Kalani Seaside Resort has an
excellent restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
For a wonderful Ahi burger or an occasional Luau at the end of
the coastal road there is Uncle Robert's Hamburger Shack, about
10 minutes away in Kalapana.
Kalani Oceanside Retreat
There is a surprising variety of restaurants in Pahoa.
Paulo's Italian is our favorite, and we have often enjoyed the
Thai restaurants, the Village Cafè or the Mexican
restaurant. And in downtown Hilo there is no end to fine
dining. |
